Lazy Spa installation

I’ve just had an NICEIC assessment and he’s picked me up on a lazy spa being connected to an outside socket. The lazy spa comes with a 10mA PRCD, he said I should treat it as a bathroom special location. Surely an outside socket in as outside socket and it’s not up to me what a customer plugs into it. The outside socket is on a 30mA rcd. Be interested to hear your views.....

Agreed, an outside socket is just that, an outside socket.
In my opinion, it should be treated as such and meet all the requirements for AN OUTSIDE SOCKET.

It is as you say not your fault if someone plugs in a lazy spa, lawn mower or an electric chair!!

Just make sure the socket meets requirements, when it is installed.

the lazy spa tubs are designed to be plugged into an outside socket. tell the assessor to take the issue up with manufacturer. see how far he gets with them. what better protection can you get over a 10mA RCD?

So if the lazy spa had been unplugged during the assessment how should the outside socket be treated then

I do wonder if these assessors engage their brain before spouting a load of drivel

It’s just an outside socket. The lazy spa is nothing to do with the Installation.

I bet spa manufacturers don’t care what the electric supply is like.

I saw one recently where the spa installation manual said they wanted a rotary isolator, with flex left for them to connect to.

Really? A live isolator and a bit of flex left where anybody could turn it on before they install the spa?

So if a customers ask you to supplier a socket for a particular device, you ignore what they want it for, just cos it’s a socket. All these manufacturers for similar devices, advise people to employ a competent electrician. You can’t ignore what your client tells you, what they intend to use it for.

Ive been asked to do many an outside socket during lockdown.

"only for the lawnmower, maybe christmas lights...."


No mention of a spa... but when you get there, its sitting in a box waiting to be unpacked
