Question more for domestic lads.

Is there still a big demand for Downlights in kitchens or is the fad dying out now.

I'm redoing my kitchen soon and debating down lights or not as don't want it to show its age 10 years if the craze dies out

Cheers ppl

I don't think it's a fad. Unless it's a 30 year fad so far.
It's a neat solution to give a good spread of light into a space that requires light in all nooks and crannies for working, but is crammed with awkward wall furniture. Looks heaps better than track lighting or spots on a bar any day.

Don't relish the day when they do. Filling in all them holes will be a nightmare.

Downlighters can look really good if their installation is given proper consideration, otherwise it can end up looking like there's a load of torches in the ceiling. I listed a few considerations in another thread somewhere - I reckon in a kitchen it's more important to light the worktops with under-cabinet lights, but either way I'd agree that downlighters seem to be here to stay.

Edit: This is the other thread (link).

And if its your own place why not add plinth lights too?

The only thing I would add is if the room is large, seriously consider "splitting" the down lights onto 2 switches to be able to have varied lighting levels ... this works really well when you have under cupboard lighting and to an extent plinth lights too!

Ok might be novice question but never fitted Downlights I'm now looking at re do ceiling so mess not an issue.

What's the general rule how close together how many in a room etc

I generally keep them approx 650mm from walls and around 1000mm between each other. Obviously depends on various factors such as ceiling height, how bright the lamps are, and beam angle. Also if walls are rough then don't have the cans too close too highlight the fact they are rough.

Pay attention to the layout of the worktop in a kitchen. You don't want the downlight positions to stray too far away from the worktop edge or you'll be casting shadows when stood at the worktop. This obviously depends on ceiling height, and to a small extent, beam angle.
Worktop edge positions can obviously clash very easily with tall larder units though so plan it carefully.
