Hi i was thinking about putting led downlights in my kitchen but don't know how far apart to put them or what wattage as you've probably guested I'm not a sparks so any other advice / tips would be good
 
Depends on the size and shape of your kitchen, what other light you have available, height of the ceiling etc.
Generally speaking I'd have the lights centred around the middle of the room rather than in the corners.
 
as a rough guide, you want the downlights approx. 1m from each corner, 1m apart. then , depending on the dimensions of the kitchen, 2 or 3 rows. suggest each downlight be 3w -5w LED.
 
ok so 2 rows 1m apart, 3 lights in each row. approx. 1.4m spacing. obviously, these dimensions would have to be adjusted to avoid joists.
 
Work in a kitchen, and downlights that are not part of a ce prewired complete kit, are both notifiable work. To be honest if your not able to self certify it would probably be cheaper to get a registered electrician to carry out the work as LABC charges are very expensive if they are going to certify it for you, just a thought
 
Call in a Part P sparkie as its notifiable.

Part "P" is a subsection of the Building Regulations and specifically applies to "certain" electrical work in and around domestic homes.

Electrical changes such as lights in a kitchen fall under such regulations and thus would need to be installed and tested by a "Part P" electrician (a member of Elecsa, Napit or NICEIC) who will also be able to do the necessary notification with your LABC (local area building control)
