Hi,

I have recently been having a fault with my LED flood light in my garden. It works OK for about 3 minutes and then flickers like a strobe. If you turn it off for a period, then turn it back on again it works for 3 minutes again and then again flickers like a strobe. I have had these lights for about a year and only used them a handful of times so am dissapointed this has happened. I have attached some images of the light and its manufactuer label. Can I fix this myself? Is it the chip or a capcitor or something inside?

I was wondering if someone could tell me if these ones are any good because they were chosen by the electrician who installed the wiring and what manufacurer people reccomend I go for? I was shocked to see you can buy 50 watt floods LED for ~ÂŁ20 (what are you going to get for that money) and thought they may go wrong as most likely cheap foreign rubbish chips etc.

The magazine I am looking at (CPC) has choices from Pro Elec, Manhatten or Eterna. Price is not so much of an issue if they work for a decent time 50000 hours, but replacing cheap lights every year for 20 pounds a pop adds up.

Hi Rob and welcome to the froum, I have approved your post but Admin may relocate it to diy when they are next online, but hopefully this should get you some answers for now.

There's not much in those floodlights, just an LED chip and a driver; certainly nothing that's worth replacing yourself.
I've installed loads of LED floods like that and only had a problem with one of them, but I'd butchered that up and modified it. The rest of them are on for about 6 hours a night every night and have been fine. I'm not sure what make they are - I just call the supplier and ask for an LED floodlight.

I'd try calling the electrician who installed them and saying what you've said here.

My prefered choice of led floods is brackenheath.

I always use Integral unless I want one with an integrated PIR, then it's Steinel.

Can't be done with going back to sort out cheap tat.

Does the Steinel have a 'friendly' light ? I haven't seen a led that I like the hue of yet.

The problem has been solved by just keep trying and trying the light. I believe it was lack of use that was wearing the flood light out. One of those little ironies that not using something actually wears it out quicker. It may have been damp or somthing but it is OK now. Use things frequently. I have learnt. Thank you for the replies.
