D80

Hi all, has anyone done much work with LED Floodlights on motion sensors? Are there any fittings you would recommend?

Got a client looking for a few to be fitted but its not something I have worked with to date. Basic requirements would be that its around the same light output as the old 500W Halogen.

Have told client what usually knackers LED lighting isn't the amount of time off, but the amount of switching cycles.

I would be surprised if frequent switching would knacker LEDs (I know it's not good for switch start fluorescents).

Basic LED indicators have been used for decades being switched on and off at high speed. Perhaps LED lighting drivers might fail. Do you have anything specific on this D80?

I have an LED PIR floodlight at home that does not get switched very often and I have used an LED replacement lamp (very costly) at 8W which is about equivalent to 120W halogen. I think you are looking at about 30W for a 500W equivalent, but don't quote me.

I would not expect LEDs to suffer from frequent switching, that is what diodes do. LEDs suffer more from being on for a long time and get the circuitry overheating and reducing the life.

Meteor sell some LED flood lights with the integral LEDs, that I have seen demonstrated and seem OK, as they come with PIR sensors then there should not be too much problem. -------->>>>>>>>

On the lighting just what I have listed.

On the switch cycles, nothing in writing, but seen from several sources they think that's what can knacker them. I've been fitting LED lights for well over two years now, ranging from LED High Bays to downlights and G9's. Not had any fail to date- the high bays could have as I was in London at the time and no longer there, so no idea how they are doing. Everything here I know is still going, including a lot of hotel lighting which is on 24/7.

LEDs them selves will not really be affected by the on/off cycles but more the power supplies/drivers that are used with the LEDs. their tolerance to on/off largely depends on the quality of the power supply that is incorporated within the fitting.

P.S

I have included a link to a buyers guide page which compares the equivalent wattages for your future referral.
Even though 30w doesn't quite produce the same about of light as a 500watt halogen flood, We still find this is the most popular choice as a direct replacement.

We use these guys, Red Hot LED - Suppliers of LED Lightingtheir
30 watt PIR's are easily a direct competitor for a 500 watt halogen

That will work fine as long as the Pirs use relay switching, some don't.
