I have been asked to install gu10 led downlights in place of existing 12v 50w gu10. the lights are controled by a dimming panel.(scene set )

The spec for the panel says an optimal minimum load is 100W.

Will this type of dimmer work for dimable led lamps if i can get the loads close to 100w?

Thanks in Anticipation

If you are replacing the existing 12V halogen spotlights with 12V LEDs (not GU10 as GU10 are mains voltage) then you will need to be aware of any minimum VA rating on the transformers. With regards to the dimming panel, if it says 100W is the minimum load then it means 100W is the minimum load! You run the high risk of buggering up the control system and the lamps if you don't adhere to the minimum/maximum ratings provided. One way of getting around this is to add a suitably sized capacitor to raise the apparent power of the circuit thus mimicing a 100W load.

It would help if I could know the make of the existing panel, is it a Lutron one? Aurora? Niko? Rako?

You will need to ensure that the panel is set to LED mode (if it has one) as this will utilise its trailing edge capacity. Do you know how to do this? You also need to make sure if the existing transformers are electronic that they are dimmable. Some electronic transformers however don't cope well with external capacitive loads so you could potentially have a problem there.

In all honesty, you' be better off scrapping the idea of installing 12V LEDs, the idea is prone to too many potential problems and complications. Get the customer to agree to mains voltage integrated fittings as they are better value for money, they last longer, they have a better lumen/watt value, they will be more compatible with dimming panels, they produce a much better quality of light and they also look better.

Thanks D Skelton

the controlpanel is Anytronics | Contractor Dimming Packs | 12 Channels | DMX Control

My intention was to replace all fittings with gu10 5wlLED

I guess this panel is not trailing edge dimmer.

so i could change the panel, or remove panel fit a new 3phase board and a bank of 400w dimmer swithches.

What do you mean by intergrated fittings. and will this solve the dimming problem?

the installation is in a retaurant so its about how the look too.

thanks

Unfortunately it's back to the drawing board buddy, that panel uses triac dimmers which are incompatible with LEDs. My advice would be to rip the panel out and fit a bank of trailing edge dimmers paying specific attention to their minimum and maximum loading.

You have three options with regards to LED lamps. You can fit 12V LED lamps in place of the current 12V halogen spots. You could rip out the trannies and fit mains downlight cans with LED GU10s. The third and better option in my professional opinion is to fit integrated LED fittings like this: Aurora m10 Fire Rated Downlight

These are essentially all in one LED fittings, no seperate lamp. The unit is all encompasing. They are better than GU10 LEDs in just about every way!
