hi everybody,

I have a dilema.. A customer has just bought an Led lighting kit ( recessed colour changing ) for her ceiling. The problem is that she wants to be able to switch the lights on and off at a wall switch but the transformer for the kit is a plug transformer. Now, the most obvious option is to go and by a standalone transformer type but is there away of utilising this plug transformer to be able to be switched...

bit of a mind boggler i know..

Thanks!

from the sheds you can buy plug in remote control adaptors.( £20 for a set 0t 3) plug into one of these and she can use the remote. then she's got 2 spare units to use for table lamps etc.

Not sure if I understand your dilemma correctly but you can usually dismantle the plug type transformers, split the plastic casing, remove the goodies and mount the trannie in a small box that can go above the ceiling.

Edit, Not sure how the warranty would be affected, might be worth checking first.

Just take a supply from the nearest socket circuit using a FCU, stick a 20A double pole switch on the wall at normal switch height then feed a single socket mounted in a cupboard near where the lights are going and just plug the transformer in. Either that or install a 5A socket in a cupboard switched via the lighting circuit in the room you're working in and make up a 5A to 13A converter mounted in a adaptable box with the transformer in. So long as the box is labelled to state what it's for then it'll be fine. The other alternative and possibly not the best would be to use a 13A socket instead of a 5A and label it to state it should be loaded with a maximum of 3A and what the exact use of this socket is for. Not the best practice as someone could plug a hoover in to it but worst case they'll take the trip out and look like a numpty for not being able to read! No different to the countless properties in this country that have a socket in the loft off the lighting circuit for the TV amplifier after all.
