The following is the text of an e-mail just received from my Trade body, The Solar Trade Association. The reason Sonia is introducing herself is she is a brand new appointment funded by the industry to run a positive PR and information campaign in the run up to the General Election. There are major threats to the industry, especially at large scale, but these will impact all the way down the food chain. FITs would already be under review were it not for the forthcoming Election. We need to stop in its tracks the kind of negativity suffered by onshore wind to the extent there are proposals to ban new developments should the Con-Dems win again. The fossil fuel lobby feels it once again has a head of steam and will do anything to protect it's interests.
This is me circulating this among my pro solar contacts. Please e-mail Sonia to add your name to the letter.
Thanks in anticipation of your support.
Dear Members,
My name is Sonia and I have recently started as the Campaign Coordinator for the Solar Trade Association.
We are doing a letter from businesses to the Prime Minister to urge him to back the UK’s solar power industry – please see full text of the letter below. We have arranged to deliver the letter to 10 Downing Street on Monday 7 July.
Would you be willing to co-sign the letter below to the Prime Minister? Would you be able to circulate it among any pro-solar business contacts?
It is so important to show the Prime Minister that there is real business support for the stable growth of this technology – and we are looking for CEO level signatures.
Anyone who would like to co-sign simply needs to reply to this email () by this Friday 4 July 2014 with their name, job title and company and they will be added to the letter.
If you have any questions, please just get in touch!

LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER
Dear Prime Minister
We are writing to express our concern about the levels of uncertainty in the solar power industry as a result of recent proposed policy changes by your energy department.
We urge you to act to secure the UK solar industry and to strengthen the UK’s position in the soaring global solar market estimated at over $130bn by 2020.
On larger commercial and industrial roofs and in ground-mounted schemes solar is the second cheapest major renewable in the UK. Overly restricting solar’s growth in these cost-effective applications therefore makes no sense from a consumer value perspective.
Solar is a secure, home-grown solution to Britain’s energy crisis. Thousands of UK businesses have already invested in onsite solar power in order to reduce their climate impact and to benefit directly from more stable energy costs. The UK industry comprises over 2,000 SMEs, directly employing 16,000 people. 61% of the value of large-scale solar investment accrues to the UK, higher than for many other energy sources. The potential for further employment, innovation and growth across the industry is exceptional, as international experience shows.
Just a short period of stable Government support is needed to deliver subsidy free solar in the UK (by the end of the next Parliament). We very much welcome the very positive benefits solar parity will deliver for UK businesses including improving international competitiveness, lower energy price inflation and improved electricity sector competition.
We urge you to back the UK’s emergent solar power industry.
Yours sincerely,
