Light Bulb still on even when dimmer is switched off...

Hi,

I'm new to this website and am not experienced in electrical work. I know I'll need an electrician to come and sort out the issue but i wish to know what it is so that the wool isn't pulled over my eyes.

The problem is that in my daughters bedroom, there is a dimmer switch, and recently we noticed that when the light is switched off, the bulb is still on, though dimmer than when fully on. I've removed the bulb for the time being just in case.

Please could someone explain what could be the cause of this and how to rectify it.

It could be a faulty dimmer or it could be a wiring problem. Easiest way to find out which is to replace the dimmer with a standard switch and see if the problem persists. If it does then you'll definitely need an electrician to trace and remedy the problem.

Before you do anything make sure you have switched of the electrical supply for the house and make sure no one is going to put it back on, then and only then you could try replacing the dimmer switch it should be just a case of copying the connections. If your unsure at all you could put your location on here and find a electrician to help.

Sorry I keep forgetting the disclaimers. Make sure the power is switched off to the whole premises, don't fiddle with anything unless you're qualified and there's a Health and Safety official on site and a spare one on standby. Etc etc etc.

most likely? a knackered dimmer switch!!! Best advice youll get? Call an Electrician to change it

remember that if you fit a metallic dimmer, then it must be earthed. some older installations did not have a cpc on the lighting.
