Hi guys,
a customer has asked me to fix a ceiling rose to a bit of decorative wood in an attic room.
Am i correct in thinking this is a big no, no ?
Or can i get around this by fitting a fire rated ceiling gasket underneath ??

Any help will be appreciated..

I am not certain, but I think a ceiling rose fitted to wood is OK. I have fitted them to wooden beams in garages and the like.
I do remember that the part P guidance states that where wood is used as the enclosure that this may not be safe, but so long as the wood is just something the sheathed cable passes through this should be OK, otherwise you would not be able to pass cables through joists!
There should be no significant heat generated from the rose (unless you have very bad connections!)
The items you cannot fit to wood are those labelled not suitable for flammable surfaces (F in triangle crossed out) and these are normally the ones with a lamp close to the surface that can heat up the surface. I have refused to fit one of those.

a ceiling rose doesnt produce heat its when fittings that are liable to cause heat is when you need additional protection from fire ,the connections are installed on a plastic base which protects the wood from direct contact of the electrical connections .

So long as it's got a base that stops the inner cores of the cable coming in to contact with the timber and the fitting features the F mark (triangle with an 'F' in it) then you'll be fine. Anything else is a no no especially if it's a fitting incorporating a halogen lamp that projects light forward as these have to be sited so no flammable surface is within 0.5m of the front of the lamp.

My god!!! How did we ever survive all these years fixing just about every known light fitting to wooden fixings!! We must have all been blessed, ...as the Yanks say!! lol!!
