Im putting up some new lighting in my shed (large shed/aviary to keep parrots), and replacing an old dimmer unit and would like some advice please, i was going to just botch it and see if it works, even use some twin and earth wire i have lying around, but i'd rather it was done correctly...

basically the dimmer has 2 wires coming off it, 1 for bayonet fitting bulbs (upto 400w, it has a bayonet fitting on it already), 1 for tube/strip lights (upto 600w, just an open end cable atm)
the dimmer has a timer on it for sunrise and sunset, it allows the parrots to think the days are longer etc, the bulb dims up in the morning over 30 mins, tube kicks in, bulb goes off, and vice versa for sunset

I want to run 4x bulbs, and 3x 4ft striplights off the unit to cover the whole shed, whats the best way to do this considering the lights have one feed?
split the feed at its first point for each type of light?
or simply run into one light, then out of into the next?
and what cable should i use?

thanks
Mike

you need to consider the load which will be drawn, the cable size and protective device/s, the cable feeding the shed, also the installation will have to be tested in accordance with BS7671, and notified to your local council building control under part p of the building regs. to be honest, it's not really a DIY job. if you post your location then i'm sure someone on the forum will be close to you and be able to give you a sensible quote and happy parrots.

Yes, I know.....the feathers get stuck between your teeth and clog up the gullet...

edit: Sounds like a nice little weekend project... SWA down to the garden shed, CCU, plastic pipe to light fitting and stop ends then flexibles out to the controller and to other fittings...a couple of sockets to supply the Xmas lights and one for the lawn mower and a drinks chiller and you're on your way :)
