Light not getting enough voltage??!!!

Have a problem with an upstairs light that only seems to be receiving 38 volts. Any ideas why? All the other upstairs lights are fine. Have access to the loft but the owner has nailed a wooden floor to the joists so will be a bit of a pain gaining access!

sounds like a lost or damaged neutral. You are not getting a return path so low voltage. have fun finding it

Get those loft boards up!

do continuity test if the other lights are fine chances are its only one leg. Take your time and be patient
Are there joint boxes?
Is the wiring try plate?
Are the neutrals at the switch?

chaeck all this and try and do a circuit diagram as you go it helps when your working out how its wired

Looks that way! There a fooker as well. Inch thick tounge and groove and nailed down. Something to look forward too!

do a continuity test (method 2) on the neutral....should find where its been damaged........

No neutrals at switch and there probably are junc boxes somewhere under loft boards. Only has neutral and live so not part of the same continious loop as the other upstairs lights. Also has no cpc.

It`l been trapped no doubt under one of them boards or nailed possibly?.........we went to a job on thursday.....line-earth fault on a lighting circuit..guess what....same thing people boarding lofts and not looking what their doing......

and thats the thing.....all joints to be accessable which is why wiring 3 plate is better.............

agreed...the first port of call should be anything accessable.....such as light fittings as you say..........

any fittings first then go for the cable...........
