Whilst changing a 4ft baton fitting in a kitchen I came accross something that confused me a little. Upon taking the fitting down I discovered a strip connector with three perm lives, three neautrals, switch live for the current light and a switch live for the light 2ft away. Upon taking the 2g 2w switch off I discovered that the person that had done the work had used a three core cable from the switch to fitting number 1 and linked out the lives at the back of the switch. I don't really understand why someone would do this. Any suggestions? So to reiterate3 CORE + Eswitch has perm live coming from light 1linked out to the other side of the switch to produce a perm live on the other sideone core used as switch live for light oneother core used as sw l for light 2AT LIGHT 1standard loop in with extra neautral and switch live for light 2AT LIGHT 2T+E going inAny recomendations? :-\ Surly this should have been a straight forward loops in or wired with singles?

Other than it being something you've not seen before, and being confused by it, what regulations do you feel it contravenes? If none, then forget about it and move on. Life's too short.

it is substandard. would we not recommend a rewire of that circuit to get it upto standard? cant believe the advice is just to leave it as is :-/

Finding it difficult to understand your description, perhaps a drawing may help?
Cant see whats wrong with utilising the 3rd core as another switch wire,
where was the terminal strip, in an enclosure behind the light? or within the light?

If it is safe and it works, what's the issue? Lighting circuits can be done in many weird and wonderful ways, but with the same end result. The lighting circuits in my own house are not how I would have done them, took me a bit to figure out what was going on, but it is not in any way dangerous.

you ain't lived till you've seen all upstairs lights spider wired into 1 JB. with the cpc's bare and twisted together outside the JB.

yeah i see no problem with utilising the 3rd core as a switch wire if it is actually for the light it is going into or if used as a strapper but thats not the case. it is a strange setup with a mixture of old and harmonised colours but i guess i will just put it back as is :-/

Had a break away from this site because of all the ridiculous threads i kept seeing, thought id pop along tonight to have a look whats been going on and this is the first thread i click on.....

I guess some things will NEVER change

Are you sure it's not the neutrals linked out at switch and the other switch feeds an outside light?
SERIOUSLY! Have you never seen or used a three core and earth cable to wire a 2gang switch before???
Absolute basic domestic wiring technique! Why is this even a post anyway??!! and why is the OP working without supervision??!!

Yes I have seen a 3 core used before as a strapper. This is not the case at all. If you would read what I have put it is not wired in a conventional way. I would use a 3 core for 2 way lighting. And no not a Electrical Trainee. I was on the tools from being 16 years old. The comments there are a tad condesending. If I would have uploaded the photo you would have seen the snag. Fortunatly I have sorted the issue now. Was deffo not a neautral as well, deffinatly a switch live.
