Lighting circuit

I have been working in a place called Canon workshops in Canary Wharf, it consists of workshops ,it is just a room about 8m x 8m, the electrics is very basic, a high voltage indust consumer unit, one feed coming out for the plug sockets on the right , and one for the sockets on the left, these are not on a ring . The lighting is the same just one feed for the lights, with a switch coming from the unit, once again this is not on a circuit . The chap who rents this unit, is splitting the area up into a few rooms,in one room he wants down lights, at the moment there is a junction box on the wall and it is only bringing the live down, which is fed from the lights high in the rafters the ceiling is about 6m high, my question is should there be a neutral or can I just feed off of the live .All work done will be checked and passed by a qualified electrician once completed .

of course you need a neutral. the work should be done from start to finish by a qualified electrician. you wouldn't do your own brain surgery , then get a surgeon to check it, would you?

If you just use the live, and not the neutral, only half the current will flow and so the electricity bill will be cheaper. I wired my house like this. And got it checked by an elektrishan. Daz

First of all I am not a muppet, you have never met me or spoke to me ,I was asking the question because it seem strange that there was only a live coming down, a simple answer would have done.

you probably have just a L coming down to a switch, with a switched L going back up to the light/s. the lights need the neutral, but the switch just needs to be in the L. however it is, any work should be carried out by a competent spark.
