Afternoon All,
As some of you may know I've been working in electrical design for a year and a bit following 8 years on the tools.
Now I'm thinking of starting up my own lighting design business, however I'm unsure as to whether it will work or not (I appreciate it does as some people have done it very successfully) But in your opinion and experience is it something you come across fairly regularly? I appreciate in the commercial sector large companies tend to have their own interior designers, But have you come across jobs in the domestic / small commercial sector where a lighting designer (someone who'd choose fittings, do the calcs, CAD up the lighting drawings etc) would have been handy used or useful? or would you yourselves use one if a job required it or would you just 'go it alone'?

Thanks In advance

I know of some smaller companies (i.e. one up from sole traders) who've used lighting design provided by some of the larger wholesalers, for jobs in the commercial sector. Not sure you would get much work in the general domestic market, but perhaps you in the larger more bespoke properties or projects. Perhaps keep it as a side line, for the time being?
Good luck for the future though.

I think for the minute I'll keep it as a sideline, I think until / if I manage to get 'in' with a few architects or contractors then I imagine business won't be enough to keep the good lady in mood suppressant tablets....

Lee, I did think about doing the CAD side of it, It's just so bloody dull and the software isn't cheap or I would.

Would need to be a blooming big house to warrant a lighting designer being employed I would have thought. Can't see why any 'normal' house would need a lighting designer brought in, but maybe it's just me? Daz
