im after refresh on some lighting regs....

when have downlights got to be fire rated/fire gaurds?

when do you have to use lv downlights?

specific!

They have to be fire rated when they are being fitted in ceiling which is separating 2 fire zones. This is normally not required in your average 2 storey house, but the fire rated fittings also have a degree of sound proofing, which is needed whan your are decreasing the sound proof of the ceiling ( ie cutting loads of big holes in them ).

I always use the fire rated ones ( you can get them quite cheap now ), unless in a suspended or lowered ceiling maybe.

People seem to think that you have use E.L.V spots if in a bathroom, but the way I understand it is that if the ceiling is higher than 2.25m then mains voltage can be used. Which I prefer as there are no trannys to worry about.

AFAIAA you can use any spots in a bathroom as long as they have the correct IP rating.

You can use any spots that are appropriate for the zone, however with the low voltage ones the tranny's do create a lot of heat so there is an increased risk of fire. That can be overcome with thermal hoods if the bathroom is upstairs (ie easy to get to the top of them)....if not then use fire rated downlighters.
