108 industrial LED fittings (horticultural) 240v.
only have 3 phase and earth in building panel.
question - can I arrange the lights in 3 rows (36) join the 1 end of each row together (star config) then feed each line with a different phase. E.g like a star motor winding.

So, it is 3-phase lighting, but 240V?

How does that work with our nominal 400V 3 phase supply?

Are you sure these fittings do not need a neutral?

And, to your orignal post, you will need a 3 phase supply to each fitting, and divide them up into separate circuits, according to length of circuit and current requirements.

Alanl, I think you need to read the OP again!

He has 240V fittings (ie. single phase) but only a TP supply with no N.

He is proposing to connect an equal number to each phase and just common together the neutral connections from each fitting without connecting them to neutral.

It may not work with the electronics in the LEDs, if they generate any hormones in the neutral then these don't cancel out, they add together.

Do they always supply a neutral?

Balanced loads don't normally require a neutral.

Star connected motors don't have a neutral, star connected heaters/immersion heaters don't have a neutral.

One of the practical tasks at college when I did my apprenticeship was taking measurements on a bunch of lamps connected in star without a neutral.

It was an actual balanced load, nothing theoretical about it!

The OP has made a perfectly sensible assumption that he could balance his loads and not need a neutral. The trouble is LEDs may not behave as a normal load, harmonics may come in to play.

This type of question is what this forum is all about! I remember the task at college about balancing a load over three phases!! This is an excellent question with the influx of LED on the market, I've not come across an installation with no neutral for some time though, I'm interested to watch this one develop

So in theory I could do it. But would not be able to get a perfect balance, because of electronically controlled LED lights. I have been an industrial sparky for many years and just wanted to put this out there. Sorry if you thought it was a daft question, but every day is a learning day.
