hi im declan and work at a harbour in derry. i have a problem with my boss and a light. he wants me to fit a 240 volt light two feet from the blidge of a boat. I think it is unsafe as the blidge is full of water and it has he potential to kill a man. I know thier is regulations bs8450, for installations on board ships. So I am hoping someone here has knowledge of these and could advise me accordingly.

By "blidge" do you mean 'bilge'?
If so I'm pretty sure lights in bilges are usually extra low voltage, ie 12 or 24v. As mentioned they should be suitably IP rated.

Hi All
Is it true that 440Vac Sub Switchboard cannot be installed close to its 440Vac Main Switchboard, because this will cause Eddy Current which will trips Circuit Breakers? To my understanding Eddy current is not induce by having two Electrical Switchboard close together.
Could someone be kind enough to enlighten me on this issue?
Thank you & best regards
Vaslan

If the bilge is full of water then the is a serious problem somewhere as barring for a small amount the bilges should be dry.

Does the Chief Engineer now about it and doing nothing about it?

Might be a case of reporting it to the Irish equivalent of the MCA in the UK on the quiet as the boat may need investigating and stopped from sailing.

well, if there are lots of waters, I strongly suggest 12V or 14V, even 9V lights. Even there are boat lights with IP68, but not safe indeed. Your boss is making block on you..lol
