Advice please .Is it ok to put a junction box into a ring main then from that put a fcu with a 13amp fuse for a cooker hood, then from that fcu put another fcu with a 5amp fuse for 2 under cabinet strip lights using the correct size wires etc ?

well spotted, geordie. a 5A would be ideal for the hood, but then he'd need to fit a 3A for the lights to achieve discrimination.

this would only provide discrinination if the fault was betweem 3A and 5A or there abouts, any fault current will take them both and the mcb feeding them.

we are only protecting the cable and providing a place for local isolation of the fan unit in case it needs to be worked on.

Discrimination is next to impossible to achive in a domestic enviroment with mcb's at the cu.

Thanks for replies so I would be able to go from junction box from ring main with 2.5mm wire to fcu then feed off to cooker hood with 5amp fuse then go from that fcu with 2.5mm wire ?? to another fcu then feed off that with 1.0mm wire to two 30 watt strip lights with 3amp fuse

If its just info on how the job can be done then that is fine, but you will need to get a local leccy guy/gal in to do the work, as this work comes under Part P and the work will need to be certified.
I also agree with Geordie Spark in post 5 and that 13 amp for a cooker hood seems excessive. The manual for the hood will tell you what size fuse it needs to have.

This is at my own house, just needed some advice as I had read different ideas on other websites all giving different opinions to what was right .

Don't matter whos house its at. If you build an extension at your own house, you still need to comply with building regs.

The problem with asking on forums, is people give different answers, some correct and others not so. If you decide to go down the incorrect route and something happens is it worth the hassle?

As its such as simple task and you are asking questions, i'd just get a few quotes and get it done right.
