Low ohm metre (continuity)
...... (Insulation resistance)
Rcd Tester
Impedance Tester (Earth Loop)
Voltage tester (Volt Metre)

what do you call an insulation resistance tester, mega ohm meter? doesn't sound right.. help would be much appreciated.

I'd go with Ch.4 of GN3 which lists it as Insulation Resistance Ohm Meter

Bang on mate. If you refer to GN3 it tells you the instrument used for each appropriate test under the relevant test heading. It also gives you some info on the scale it needs to be on etc. Read, study and digest, you will need to learn this information as it is written in GN3 if you do 2391.

Cheers.........Howard

a magic box commonly used to wake up apprentices. used to be just called a Megger, until AVO took the name on board.

I've known it as a Mega Tester since my apprenticeship (I'm guessing because it takes readings in the MegaOhm range). Also commonly referred to as an insulation tester. Mine has a thick, stitched leather case, leather shoulder strap and a winding handle on the side. It's still a spring chicken at 35 years old and just sailed through it's calibration test with flying colours a couple of weeks ago.

The secret to having tools that last a lifetime is don't let other people use them ;-)

Whyever not?
Surely the secret with good tools is to look after them. These instruments are tough anyway, so if you take reasonable care of it, it should last the proverbial lifetime.
