Evening all
I am about to start costing/proposing an ensuite refit The part I would like help with involves replacing the existing light and fan
Customer currently has a separate light and fan (operated by same pull switch, there is a window in the room & both sited in the main ceiling part of the room) What I would like to propose as a replacement is to remove fan from the part of the ceiling and replace light with two halogen downlighters (small loft over ensuite, will use fire rated hoods) Then install a combined light/fan(will be correct rating etc) in the shower cubicle All to be operated from the single pull switch Would this seem feasible/sensible ? If so what is the best way to wire up ? Haven't had a look on the loft yet so not sure what wiring is up there Would it be more practical to have downlighters on main pull switch and then fan/light on separate pull switch outside the cubicle ? Havent checked yet to see if the bathroom is on a separate circuit which is RCD protected.
Thanks for looking :)

the bathroom doesnt need to be on a seperate circuit, if you have access above 3plate it in a jb with a sw leg for the fan light and another for the downlights or just the one sw leg and loop at the fan light and 1st spot ending at the second spot.
id put them all on the same switch. just adhere to the bathroom zones and ip rate our accessories accordingly.
yeah a bit long winded.

I usually take the feed to the first downlighter and set up a maintenance free junction box using choc box and wago connectors.

From there, twin and earth to the switch and back, then switched live and neutral onto downlights as standard, but also pick up a permanent live, switched live, and neutral using a three core and earth to the fan, through an isolator.

Job done! :)

Thanks guys I was looking to put fan/light on separate so that they don't have to have fan running when just popping to the loo etc at night

If it's for an ensuite you could use normal switches outside the bathroom - downlighters on one, showerlite on the other. If the fan can be switched independently of the light, maybe use a 3 gang switch - main downlighters, shower downlighter, and fan, so if the customer needs to get up for a pee in the night they could just switch on the light in the shower.

sorry i read it wrong, i thought you were referring to a fan light.
so yeah youd need a 3 core to the fan ( maybe require to down rate to 3amp via fcu).
if its a pull switch i prefer to wire it 3 plate so theres only 1 cable at the pull switch - personal preference
