Hi guys looking for advice here,

Voltage on light casing!

Just been out and bought a new light fitting (I will attach the photo of said light) simple 2 core and earth terminal connections.
After install i wanted to check the lower ring of the light to see if it had earth continuity from the suspended ring that has 3 metal bosses, and noticed it was very high at 18.3Mohms
Checked for voltage between metal boss and metal ceiling rose and I’m getting 45v ??

Any idea why I’m gettting this ? I’ve already returned one and this is the second one from Costco and still same problem.

Cheers.

TL;DR

The lower section may not actually be solidly connected to earth by intention. The wires from the top section to the lower ring may be insulated/routes.on such a way that it is not necessary, and maybe only the main body of the light is earthed.

Hard to believe that each of the 3 arms has defective earth continuity as a result of poor manufacture.

Dodgy fitting design Mate I recon, try a different supplier

Agreed, but the main issue being the voltage between the 3 boss’ to metallic ceiling rose ?

I can’t see any wires from the boss to the ring, are the rods being used to pass electricity at a low voltage to it?

Just had a look and your light (in fact other styles from this manufacturer also) has a bona fide safety approval from an accredited CSA test house. I would feel confident that it has been designed and manufactured to be safe.

As said the lower part is likely to be isolated from the ceiling fitting containing the driver.
This is not a technical explanaton, but I would say it's not unusual to see an 'induced'/ capacitively coupled voltage on isolated parts when measured with a high impedance instrument. Once you introduce a 'load', eg by touching it (!), the minute current from the high impedance source (so no shock) results in the voltage disappearing to almost zero.

This is an artefact of using a high impedance meter. You often see threads on this forum where someone's found a strange voltage on an isolated cable and believe's it's a fault - but it's not always ?

Are you in UK or Canada? oK - sorry didn't see the location! - thanks Tel ?
