hi all, not sure about this, but ive got a black loose 1.5 in trunking thats got 247v to earth?
i thought all neutrals should be 0 volts ie "neutral"?
any ideas?

Firstly you assume its a N just because its black... Don't!
Secondly if it is a N then basic school lessons in circuits will tell you the answer why you have a voltage present to earth and I mean school not college.

If you went to the fuseboard and took a N out of the N bar on a loaded circuit and measured it between the disconnected N and earth or the N bar what reading would you get?
Have you just woken up?

And with a duff one, it just sits there, not knowing which way to turn, but drawing considerably more than its normal run current.

I did consider this but ended up going with this one. I wired it inline with the lives and works great.
