Ive got a couple of jobs coming up where i need to fit light switches and sockets downstairs in new builds with concrete floors and timber frame walls, im after a long wood bit i can drill down into the walls with from the first floor so i dont have to make any cut out in the walls to get past supports/braces are 1000mm wood bits available anywhere? Or what other methods do people use to avoid disturbing the plaster board?

cheers :)

"Hello liam",

Toolstation sell 400mm long Flat Bits at very reasonable prices - cheap enough to not have to worry about using an extension bar - and not having to worry about the Flat Bit coming out of the extension bar within the Hole.

Here is a Link to the Toolstation webpage where these 400mm Flat Bits - various sizes - are shown:

Toolstation > Power Tool Accessories > Wood Drill Bits > Extra Long Flat Wood Bits [ I think that cat. no. is for a 19mm one]

I hope this helps - I doubt whether You will be able to find Flat Bits longer than this without going to a Specialist Company - and then because they would obviously have to be manufactured from a higher quality Steel regarding the Torque resistance etc. - You would no doubt be looking at `Expensive` Items.

There MAY be longer Auger Bits / `Twist Bits` on the market [?] - where there is a section of Spiral Twist [with a pilot screw] and a long `shaft` - I have some of these 450mm long - but I have never seen any 1000mm long.

EDIT: Here are some Drill Bits to possibly do exactly what You want - although they are NOT Flat Bits [but probably better as 1000mm long bits]:

Here is a Link for a website where they sell `Machine Cavity Wood Drill Bits` - 1000mm Long X 120mm Drilling Depth [that is what is stated as the specification for `Depth of Drilling`] in various Diameters.

http://www.hall-fast.com/consumable...machine-cavity-wood-drills-length-1000-120mm/

These are stated to be suitable for Drilling through Cavities / Joists etc.

Chris

"Hello liam b",

I thought that the Link that I edited into My message was to 1000mm long Wood Bits [120mm `Drilling Capacity`] - ?

I hope that you find them ideal to do what you want.

Chris
