My college is not offering the practical part of the qualification next September so that means I will have to go on an apprenticeship. Should I target big well known companies like southern electric or should I ring the one man band kind of people. What would I be likely to get into?

have a word with the college as most will have a list of employers that they have place students with before

just 3? your get nearer to 300 before your find one mate!
I have only just started looking, but I don't even think there is that many electrical companies near me. I wasn't expecting one yet I will keep on trying though. If I did find one in the first 3 tries either it would be too good to be true or I'm a lucky one.

Get out the yellow pages and look for all electrical contractors in your area. Write and print a letter 300 times and send to the companies, follow up with a phone call a week later for an update. Try and sell yourself, if you have own transport this would me a major benefit to you. Try and stay away from one man bands and go for the big contractors. Some of them even have their own in house training schemes.
