I've been qualified for just under a year, and I'm going on to do my own work. I haven't done city and guilds so what work can I exactly do ? I'm in the middle of rewiring a kitchen, so what happens with testing, is it mandatory to test and hand over a certificate, will I have to get someone else in to test my work ? I'm not sure exactly how this works as when I worked with the company we done the work but the gaffer signed it all off.

Yes, the regs require initial verification, testing and certification of all new work. I suggest you get more familiar with the regs seeing as you are working for yourself. If you have no experience testing at all, then I suggest you stop until you know what you are doing. You should have posed your "what happens with testing?" question to yourself before you started this kitchen.

I completed my apprenticeship and trade test, which all included inspection and testing but I was made believe you must go on and do a second course purely of inspection and testing. I'm sorry if I sound stupid and naive but I was paid off 6 months after completing my trades test as the company went bust.

I'll ask again, what qualifications do you have?

If you are referring to an extra course such as the 2394/95 then no it is not necessary but may be very helpful to you. What is necessary when testing is competence and to be experienced. Do you feel you are ?

I'm really sorry if I have offended anyone but I came on here for advice to help me get on track, I done a lot of inspection and testing in the last year so yes I would say I am competent. To be honest I don't think I have helped my self any with the way I have worded my post. I'm just trying to get my head round a lot of things now I am working on my own, where to start what to do etc. it's a big step from always working with someone with a lot more experience than you, which yous all have been in that situation at one point. I have my testing equipment, I have my regs book, my site guide, and I am confident in my work, I have worked on many jobs myself and done the testing but my gaffer handed me the test sheets and then signed them off therefore I was given the impression I needed and extra course to be able to sign these off myself and purchase certificates. Sorry for upsetting anyone or people who may think it's a wind up.

You are in scotland none of this part p nonsense applies up here.
get some minor works and electrical installation certificates( niceic green ones ,if you are not a member of a scheme like niceic or select are ideal.)
Carry on rewiring this kitchen to the best of your ability.
Test the kitchen circuits and fill out the test forms
Bill customer and hand over certification
job done.
You should have checked the ZE ,bonding and circuit protection for suitability before you started i might add

Could you not point Mr Salmon towards your many wind turbines, and accept the plentiful, free electricity,as his ego deflates? :stooge_curly:
