Arrived at a factory today to a what should have been a basic problem with a motor, and was introduced by the so called 'Maintenence electrician' who took me to the offending motor, first impresssions were the motor connector housing and block was smashed, he relayed to me he couldn't get hold of one to fit so i did a little testing to first check motor was ok when i noted it was in star connection but been 11kw motor of this nature it should have been delta connected, it tested ok but i connected in delta and ran it but it kept taking out the front end mcb as expected, after explaining this to him that it needed sorting and due to supply limitations i would fit a soft start, he said "theirs nothing wrong with the way its done and ask what a 24 yr boy could know"
"well im 37 been repairing motors 15 yrs and cos this motor only run at a quarter of its potential is the only reason why it didnt burn out" with that he walked away and i later found out hed designed wired and installed it and was proud of his achievement
I hate wannabe sparkies but got my own back when i told the bosses the repair quote and why.

When i was an apprentice i can remember being in a factory when a maint.guy connected a star delta motor with out overloads incorrectly, it was like a bomb going off when it switched over and the dust from the girders was like snow falling.

My old man got a job 8 yrs ago and was been shown how the control board worked to bring the generator on line in a power failure and the steps to take to shut generator off once power was established cos the unit was faulty and didnt always do it automatically, well believe you me when he open the panel up and with both supplies on line and main power ready to take back over he said "this contactor sticks sometimes and needs a little help" with that he pushed it in with a driver and the grid supply met the generator supply out of phase and the generator ripped out of the floor nd through the wall.
What a demonstration, mad get could have killed everyone in that room.

Looking young is one thing, but when you turn up and they find you are female that's something else! I have had quite a few double takes in my time and then they try and trip me up assuming I have no idea what I am talking about, its great when they then start asking my advise and calling me in a crisis with a fault.
