Loop in with junction boxes

Hi,

Just a quick question regarding lighting circuits. I believe some people are wiring loop in circuits with junction boxes in the void rather than terminating at the lamp fitting. Seems a pretty good idea with regards to less connections at the light fitting. However my understanding of the current regs is that all screwed terminations should be available for inspection which strictly speaking they would not be if in the void. Can anybody please clear this up for me?

you are correct. if inaccessible, terminal connections should be maintenance free.

Don't hide any connections, it's a PITA when there is a fault! I prefer to feed the switches if poss, that only leaves one cable at the light so when they buy those poxy B&Q lights you have a chance of terminating them.

Surely they would be accessible if the JB was under a floor board. Inaccessible would mean somewhere it can not be got at. It depends whether there is a way to get to the JB. Always always loops to lamp or switches for me. JB wiring is donkeys years old and very unpractical.

Junction boxes need to be accessible. Reg no. 513.1 in the BGB

Do you not find feeding the switches leaves the boxes a bit busy when using a 2 gang switch to feed ceiling and wall lamps.

i use a deeper back box if needed.

Neutrals at switches is ok for the right circumstances.

What about 2 way switching,...you cant loop the switches then from light fitting otherwise l-n-e to switch then back upto light but if using recessed/spots you need junction box again . So al in all

just leave junction box beside light fitting that uou can pull through

whats the problem with loop in loop out system no need for jbs in a new installation other than for spot lights that is

Always loop the lives at the switches and neutral's at the lights us, and we ALWAYS chop in at least 25mm boxes, even for 1G's. Makes it easier to terminate and when the customer shows up on the 2nd fix with a boat load of dimmers, they'll fit

you will find most loops are at the switches and spots are easy to wire

Can look busy yes but neat if terminated logically. Just did a 4G 2 way with strappers, lights and loop - in one box.
