Discuss Main Bonding in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

I have been asked to update the installation at the home of a friend. He has a TNCS system so the main bonding (at present non-existent) needs to be 10mm. Problem is that the water and gas mains rise in the kitchen about 10 metres away from the cu which is in the garage. It seems crazy to have to run a cable from the MET into the kitchen with all the decoration disruption that will entail. Is it permissable to adopt a supplementary bonding principle and bond the pipes from a nearby socket or do I have to go by the book?

there's always a way .... think outside the box :))

like said kickboards, is there rendering on the outside with a lip at damp course level it can be clipped under, can it run through a roof space and come straight down to the CU. Can it be run neatly in conduit if the green and yellow isn't their thing, Hard to say without seeing it.

Can't believe you suggested such an alternative. It's called ''main bonding'' because that's exactly what it is, ...It's NOT supplementary bonding!!
And there's very good reasons for that main bonding to be in place.

actually after a re read i agree totally with engineer how far are you prepared to bend the rules just to make your job easier, you are paid to carry out an installation safely and according to BS7671.

and if you need to ask such a question then do you have a full understanding of main, supplementary bonding and earthing.

You already knew the answer before you posted the question, stick to what your training has learned you ;)

Perhaps from an onlookers point of view but not from someone who works in the trade and can explain in a professional manner why it needs to be there.

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

Indeed it would be. But that would mean having 2 things to disconnect instead of one. More margin for error. Of course, any diligent spark would...
