Main earth bonding

Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone can help me can any electrical work take place on any circuit and a minor works certificate be issued stating the departure if a the main water service is not bondedand the client is not willing for the inconveince or the expense i was under the influence that this was impossible but another electrician tried telling me otherwise any help?

give ur advice, ur reccomendations, if they do not like it then let the other spark do it. not ur house or your problem then!
the other spark will not be able to certify the new work as bonding is not in place and it asks for it on the cert, full EIC or minor works....

If there is no main bonding to water or gas you should walk away unless the client agrees to have the work carried out before or at the same time as the minor works
you should also advise them in writing that the property is in a dangerous condition due to the absence of main bonding.
This would be a code 1 or at least 2 on a PIR

please dont jump on me here, i havent done this and im probably wrong but

can you not bond the pipes where there accessible, make sure there below 0.05 doing a long lead to the stop cock
and note on cert
go easy please

Get ready as Im up a 12 rung ladder ready to jump on you ............................but no your quite right reg 544.1.2 does indeed say as near as practicable at the point of entry.

IMO the important part of the reg is before any branch, and so as long as you do that I would be happy to place the bond beyond the point of entry.

Tell the other spark to have a quick look at 131.8 if he has a brb.

Just to throw a spaner in the works,

We are all assuming that the water is in copper. Have you checked if the reason its not bonded is because its all in PVC? If so then no bonding required and do the work........

Just a point, I'm not suggesting you havent already checked this!:D

Where the water mains is lead pipe which usually is concealed under the floor boards and as lead has higher electrical resistivity than copper, wouldn’t it be advisable to bond the copper pipe (visibly) close to where it meets the lead pipe in addition to bonding the lead pipe.

I came across a few incidents where the earth clamps on the lead pipes were lose and covered with dust / soot and no one knows how long they were in that state. One could argue that the testing will reveal the dodgy connections but I can’t take it for granted the soundness of lead-pipe bonding, especially it’s not visible.

RE 'practicibly possible' quite correct, however a customer being a skinflint or not wanting his precious laminate floor taken up is not something I would say is 'practically' adverse to installing bonding.

Just tell them it needs doing, it's a major safety concern and has been a regulation since the dawn of time. If they won't have it done then you aren't doing the work. If they find someone willing to do the work without it in place then they aren't worth having.

Read Q5 HERE from the ESC

And it is main protective bonding and as long as the water pipe is not in pvc then the bonding should be in 10mm² on a tn.
