Hi

a neighbour has just asked me (after having a second solar panel install) whats occurring with their digital meter - it says "rEd" in the read out bit. And the red light flashes (but I think that just means its ... well ... metering, I think?)

Does anyone know what that means ?

Hi

RED = Reverse Energy Detected, this is for anti tamper, to stop people wiring up their meters the wrong way around to reduce the readings, however when a PV system has been connected and it is producing more power than is being used in the house it exports to the grid back through the meter hence RED.

What your neighbour needs to do, is to switch every thing off in the house (well as much as possible) when the PV system is producing well, then when the meter is showing RED make sure that it it not adding to their readings, this sometimes happens as the meter may be set up for anti theft.
I have heard of people's electricity usage going up after having PV installed, and this is the reason why, it is easy to overlook.

If there is a problem then contact your energy provider.

I hope this makes sense and helps.
