could anyone tell me if the maintenance free j/b s are just for solid twin and earth or are they suitable for the old stranded type twin and earth

Are you talking about wago/helacon type connectors?

They tend to be OK up to 7 strand conductors. For more strands you could use the cage type connectors i think.

Cant see any reason for them not to be used on stranded

Use Wago connectors in choc box , use three or five lever for stranded and push fit for solid.

White Ashley ones are Wago, and as long as you press the lever down on the top of the block (instead of just pushing the wires in) they are ok for stranded cores.
