Maximum size MCB on a 16A socket outlet

A standard 13A single socket is protected by a 32A CPD if it's sat on a ring, have a think about that.

As I said earlier the plug top fuse provides the protection

So 45a mcb 10mm cable to 1 socket would be "wrong" but 3 would be " ok "
I can't see how that's ok especially if you can't control what's going to be plugged in.

each socket is limited to 16A as whatever is plugged into a socket will have been designed for <16A , otherwise it would not have a 16A plug on it. the circuit OCPD is to protect the circuit cable.

a garage owner buys a 2 nd hand welder with no plug on and he or someone else sees the spare 16a socket (protected by 45 a mcb) and puts 16a plug on, turns out the welder is 32a..

Thanks guys I'm still sure the reg stated somewhere or other that a 20A MCB is the maximum MCB size for a 16A Socket outlet! I'm that sad i've just ordered guidance note 1 to find it! I know it doesn't sound right but i'm 99.9% sure that I've seen it somewhere in the regs! It's a pain because my regs book it in work in the van for the weekend!

it all depends on what youre asking the mcb to do.
protecting the circuit wiring ?
protecting the final equipment ?
What sort of final equipment ?
does the equipment need additional overload protection ?
its up to the designer to make that call for each job using his own engineering judgement.
not checked but i'd expect bs7671 to be flexible on the issue and not give a difinitive requirement either way.

JVM I think you are thinking of the below from the OSG as the recommendation for 16A socket outlets.
BS7671 is non committal as usual, because you will have designed the circuit correctly!

Engineer i have had a few sherbets and i agree! The MCB size relates to the cable size and desigh current not the rating of the outlet!

Thats what I was driving at with the 13 amp single socket on a 16 amp mcb but was looking for the op to figure it out

Yes but if wired in a radial circuit it is protected with a 16A MCB

My point from the start the plug top fuse limits the load able to be drawn no so with 16a plus and socket
