Well just had a very good 3/4 day with ELECSA and can now say Ive passed the assessment with 1 minor non-conformence (rectified on the spot).

Alex arrived at just gone 8am and ploughed through my manual, made a few recomendations and only pulled one NC on the fact I had not detailed all 19 clauses to be concidered on an internal MCS review meeting. Not bad, everything was electonic, so knocked out a copy on the spot and sent to him by e-mail.

Just got to wait for the paperwork to come through with the final acceptance details.

Now onto selling (4 in the pipeline) and installing...................happy days

Well done Graeme

I don't know if this is of any interest to you but it may save you some time on the quoting front in the future. There are a lot of installers out there quoting loads and loads of jobs with a low success rate. The reason why this usually is, is because they are offering poor manufactures of panels and inverters. Solar PV is a 25 year investment for the customer and they need the assurance that the panel company will be around in 25 years time, should they have any problems with the panels. Since the installers we have worked with have picked good quality well known panels and inverters that have been around for years, their success rate went straight up.

Hope this helps

Pricing one tomorrow, a nice east west split, and then a couple of south facing prospects. Will be nice to get a couple of installs in the pipeline...

Depending on size, probably 2, but if I can get them up to 4KW, the most likely an SMA SB4000 wich in essence is 2 x 2KW inverters in one as it has 2 independant MPP trackers.

As to the very smooth running of todays assessment I have to pass on my thanks to the members of the forums for all the little pointers, hints and tips gleaned - little things like sealing the meter, going OTT with labeling on the DC side etc.

Congratulations Graeme, I thought the late nights would cease after getting through MCS. I swear it has got worse.
Good luck with your business, I'm sure you will enjoy it despite the increase in workload.

Nice one, what were elecsa like?? Were you already part p with them? we are looking towards elecsa for our MCS accreditation, can i ask what did you used to seal the meter??

Thanks for all of the congrats messages.

ELECSA were very good and quite thorough. Was only pulled up on Clause 4 "point 3 sets out the scheme review schedule - minutes do not specifically mention the clauses" Yes its a little on the BS side, but my meeting minutes listed all of the company related stuff like cashflow, current workload pipe line, supplier reviews etc and all I had was a 1 liner on MCS review.....this needed to list all of the 19 clauses to be reviewed on the meeting!!!!

No prob this was rectified and emailed there and then, but still had to go down as an NC. This also had the knock on efect of altering the MCS QMS document version as I had now amended it .

Yes my Part P is also ELECSA, so just went with after a bit of research, so prety much of a muchness between them. After all they are all audited by MCS. The questions come out on an online system, so Alex had to log on, and their system is locked until 8am so they cant pre fill the night before a visit. As long as you go through each of the 19 clauses and look for the evidence of compliance you should have no problem. There is no right or wrong way to comply, some are just better than others. For example my suppliers list & PO's are held in Quickbooks. All I had to do is make reference to this in the manual.

Buying a manual off the shelf is fine if thats what you want, but I would recomend doing it yourself.

  1. You get what you want - not a generic "cut & paste"
  2. You wrote it and will therefore understand it
  3. You will know where all of the information is contained
  4. It fits in with the way YOU work
  5. Greater satisfaction knowing you did it yourself (when you pass!!!)
The audit is not hard, its just nerve wracking as you are under test conditions. All of the answers are in the book/computer in front of you, the work begins maintaining the system and this needs to be done as you go along. Coming from a QMS background in the Army, the fun that was had on the anual audit correcting/generating paperwork from 11 months previous was amazing, and its all to easy to spot who maintained and who fabricated.......

This is probably more pertinant to the 1 man bands and small companies with only a couple of people working.

  1. Do a mini-audit monthly choose 2 clauses at a time
  2. Keep training logs up to date, even if its in-house
  3. Hold and minute you meetings, even if its a phone call with a supplier call it a supplier review
  4. Review 1 risk assessment every month
  5. Monthly self calibration checks
If I had another company near me I trusted, I would offer my services as an external auditor and hope they would return the favour. Its all too easy to miss the obvious on a self audit that impartial eyes could spot!!

Just to ask Greame, I have recently passed my 2372 solar PV installation, I am a qualified electrician and electrical test engineer. I have experience in surveying properties for electrical side of solar PV Installations, electrical testing and maintenance works, I amlooking to gain experience in installing solar PV systems and asking if you have any positions at all either part time, full time or ad hoc, if you could call Gary Monahan on 07989979496 or e mail me at [email protected] to discuss if you have any vacancies.
