I need to invest in an electronic measuring device to measure roofs etc from the ground.

Any recomendations for a good lazer tape or similar?

We use Lecia Disto 8, its great for 100% accurate roof survey! pin point accuracy to measure flue's and other obstructions, plus can measure height of trees for detailed shading.

At the lower end of the cost-scale to the Disto (great units though), you could use one of our Laser Levels with built in relative/absolute digital inclinometer. The level itself is 600mm long.

How does it measure trees, where do you have to be, under the tree and point it at the top? or viewing the tree from maybe a distance

You use it from a distance and the meter does a little trigonometry for you. It's really handy.

I see the Disto D8 has the option, as mentioned above, to calculate the height off tree's for example from a distance.
We were initially looking towards the D5 as it was recommended to us but can the D5 also perform the same calculation or is this an added benefit to the D8?

I bought d5 by mistake thinking it would do the job, it's a good tool, but you need the d8, this tool can measure roof slope from the ground, and give you the pitch. Read this.http://www.electriciansforums.net/p...rum/32107-leica-d8.html?highlight=#post383063

Thanks, I think we're resigned to the fact that a D8 is needed (to make the job easier!).

No problem, make sure you get a tripod, in fact I got a tip, if you can get to a trade show were lecia are exhibiting you will get a better deal for buying on the day.

Tripod is on the shopping list, it seems to be a must.
