Hi all,

Just wanted to ask a quick question.
My parents have nominated me to their friend (old couple) to swap 3 outside lights (original lights & new are metal) which they have purchased. Fine am happy to do it.
First light was done fine, all tests done.
The next light is a pir which also feeds the other light (none pir).
The issue is that there is no earth core just the black & red. Having a look at the cables feeding the light they are in the ceiling/floor void. They dont want to lift carpets & flooring etc. I advised them that the lights need an earth or they would have to change them for plastic ones which they said no to. So now i need to try & get an earth there to the light.
The cu is not a split load with no rcds fitted but it does have a external rcd fitted before the cu.

I have been asked if i could take an earth from a socket which is on the otherside of the wall or possibly the cieling rose? Eaither way the earth would then be on another circuit which im not happy with even though it would at least then be earthed.
What other options could anyone suggest that doesnt involve lifting flooring etc?

Thanks in advance

Michael

If they don't want the fittings changed, and if they don't want you lifting carpets etc, then just tell them respectfully that you can't, fit the lights to comply with BS 7671, and walk away. It really is as simple as that. Explain the reasons why, it will be their choice as to the next move.

Can you not get double insulated light fitting(s)?

Hi Jamie,

They had already bought the lights they wanted me to fit.
If i had of been asked before they got them i would have popped over to check that the wiring had a cpc first.

Hi Pete,

Thanks again for replying so quickly.
I have just called them to explain the options & have left it up to them to decide what they want to do next.

All the best

Michael
