I have a site that has 1500w halogen floodlights illuminating a carpark. The floodlights have failed and I would fit 400w metal halide in their place. the owner wants them to be on PIR sensors. They tak a time to warm up i know but does anyone have any experience of this or alternative suggestions?

Cheers,

mike.

Thanks, i had considered this but the owner only wants the lights on when there is someone in the car park. i am half tempted to goading him into having light bollards around the carpark that come on with motion sensors.

Do you have any indication how long the halogen lights are normally on for during darkness when operated by the pir

I don't think it is viable to operate a metal halide fitting on a pir

From past experience it may be worth doing a cost analysis of the halogens operating on a pir and the metal halide running continuously or on a part night photocell

If you include relamping and initial fitting cost in your analysis you may convince the customer to run the halide lamp continuous

as Ung says Photo cell with time clock would save more dosh ie when carpark isnt expected to be in use ie time off at midnight back on around 0530 this way they will only be on at anticipated usage times theres no way to Pir halides

other option is the fluory replacement for halogens but not as bright

Thank you. This could be the way to go. Currently there are 5 1500w halogen floodlights on PIR's. If someone drives into the far side of the property then all of them are on and I'll bet the meter spins pretty quick!
The reason for not replacing it with a 1500w is that my wholesaler told me that they are obsolete, i have just been on to TLC and found they are selling them for 30 something plus vat.

The whole property could do with being re-designed, the carpark has black spots and it is regularly used by the residents.
