I'm thinking of buying a Metrel MI3000 as my first tester. Is it worth spending the extra money and getting the Metrel MI3100 with the tip commander probe?

Thank you for your advice

Martin

yes, I've got MI3002 with the tip commander great bit of kit, can activate test, send result to memory without taking eyes and hands off what your testing, been using it for over a year now and am well pleased with it - just remember to put the 9 volt battery in as i had a senior moment and couldn't get it to work, phoned supplier and felt a right one when they said check the battery - huh? what battery oh that battery doh

Try a Metrel with the Tip Commander before buying, as some testers find the Tip Commander rather heavy and bulky that's uncomfortable in the hand, preferring to use the standard probes for comfort. All MFTs that use a self powered switched probe (eg. Megger's SPL1000) suffer from this problem. Fluke's switched probe (MFT powered) is by far the most comfortable design on the market.

Hi MPB,

Since the firmware upgrade on the MI3000 just after Christmas, the addition of the Tip Commander Probe is literally the only difference between the two testers other than the colour scheme.

If you have used a remote test probe in the past and you think you may miss it, I'd go for the Metrel MI3100. Otherwise, I'd probably save the money and choose the Metrel MI3000. Remote probes can save a bit of time when it comes to testing light fittings, where you may need a few hands to hold test leads in place, though.
