Hi guys I have a garage which has 2 double sockets, 1 spur for a electric door and 2 single 5 ft fluorescent lights what's would be the ideal cable size for a supply. As its currently powered by a 1.5 T&E radial run outside from the main board unprotected under decking and up the wall......not done by me by the way.

25m of 2.5mm @25A ( it's current ratingf) will be outside VD limits for lighting.. anything over 15A you will need 4mm or 6mm.

Use your cable calcs in association with the load you calculate not forgetting to apply diversity ... you have given us very little info about the cable, proposed installation methods as well as expected loads on the sockets i.e. dryer, heater just general small loads etc ....... as you are asking the question I assume you want to install it but seem to have missed all the relevant info we require so brings the question of your competence in doing so can you show your calculations that way we know you have a grasp of the task your undertaking and we can make any minor corrections if needed and we know you will then be competent to install a safe circuit.

Theres the minimum and then theres allowing for the future, if your own house I would install a 4 way distribution board in the garage and have 1 20 AMP Radial circuit for the sockets and 1 6 amp for the lighting with 2 spare ways, as for the size of cable again if my own garage I would install a 3 core 10mm2 armoured on a 40 amp supply, however after all that if you want to do the job on the cheap I would feed the 2 sockets via a 4mm2 radial and also feed a spur unit off them to feed the light, JMO

The problem is the house is only 5 months old so how has this been signed off surely a 1.5 radial to feed a gargle electric door 2 lights and 2 twin sockets is not allowed.

it is allowed if you are mr.diy (spelt divvy) and don't bother with certs. paperwork don't make the lights come on any brighter. :2guns:

Is it done in 2.5 grey T&E pvc clipped up garage as this probably wont be UV tolerant and will show signs of breakdown within 5yrs depending on direct sun or not... also I assume at 5months it is rcd protected... what is the whole circuit set up from fuse to garage.

If the house is only 5 months old, then the whole place is still under guarantee. Write up a report for the customer, and have them give it to the builder, or send it off to the builder, if they are no longer on site!! Simples!! lol!!

Is the OP the customer?

If this is a 5 month old install, the sparks need a kick up the backside. VERY bad install IMHO.

Makes you wonder whats under the floor!

Doesn't really matter, if it's the OP's house, if it is, then he sends his own report to the builder!! lol!! Either way, the garage installation doesn't comply with either past or the latest Reg's.

New builds have always been notorious for using bottom of the barrel sparks. These day's it'll probably be Electrical Trainee's doing the installs!! lol!!
