I have bought a MK consumer unit box with just the Main switch in it and want to put RCBO's in it.
being a MK the main switch sits on the left side of the C/U,but we want it on the right side.if we put it on the right side the Neutral out lead is on the left side and we cannot connect the Busbar to the live side. Can we just swap the terminals and label them accordingly and use them (use the live as neutral and vice versa).
Did ring MK tecnical but they refused to even talk about it and said use another make if you want to do it this way.Help please

It is possible that the main switch has early make late break for the neutral pole which would make the installation hazardous if it were to be used for the Line, however it is not something I have heard of for main switches that I had assumed were simultaneous in each pole.
Might be worth checking the technical information on MK switches to check.

In general messing about with a CU can lead to difficulties and buying a CU with a right hand side switch would be easier.

Is the Purpose of early neutral make late neutral break to stop the star point from floating while the switching is taking place in a TPN system?

Would it have such an effect on single phase?

I am sure one of you more educated members can help me out on this one.

Thanks in advance. :)

I take it your tails are on the right !

IMO I would return the MK unit and fit another CU .

The last MK unit I fitted was a Sentry modle and it will be the last no room at all for dressing cables and the quality IMO has gone south with MK just my opinion !

For a single phase main switch if the neutral breaks first then the whole installation can rise to 230V for a split second, could be a potential shock risk but not a high risk unless there are neutral earth connections, instantaneous simultaneous should normally be OK.

When the manufacturers technical department tell you that you cannot do something and need to buy another company's product what help do you think we can give you?
They aren't going to advise you to give your money to another company unless there is no other option

I thought you weren't allowed to build your own CU's because it won't qualify for the fairytale 'type tested' kA rating that's bestowed upon the pre manufactured units.

I spoke to MK technical about swapping L and N inputs less than 2 years ago. They said it wasn't a problem, it was purely a double pole simultaeneous (?) switch. Labelled L and N to match the standard layout of their Sentry boards. To swap, simply stick "L" and "N" stickers on your desired terminal. If in any doubt, please contact MK technical and definitely do not take my word for it!!

I can't see any problem with it as long as the labelling is correct , many if not all of these 100a main switches are just 2 single pole units with the switches linked together.
