Mocopa metering

Hi

Does anyone have experience working within the metering side. If so, can you point me in the right direction on how to obtain a permit to operate. Cant find anything on the internet been searching for a while now.

yes i found the same site m8. But I was unable to establish if I could get training or something or if I had to go to a company and work for them direct or sub out. I see vacancies all the time for meter installers and most of them say you need a permit to operate??? where can I get this to work for various agencies or do I have to work for a registered company. i am so confused.

Seen these ads too mate.Does seem confusing,but there has to be a company somewhere that does the training.Or maybe send the company a copy of your CV and they may assess you themselves

Yes I have experience of metering. In each case the company employing has provided training. This may be on a self employed basis in which case there would be no pay for training but I would not pay for a course either. The course lasted 3 days and there was three days mentoring for which a small allowance of £40 per day was paid then an assessment by the meter operator who provide an authorisation, id and sealing pliers.

The self employed situation I describe is with Metertec see their website. This should not necessarily be taken as a recommendation of this particular company.

Having spoken to one of these advertisers I think their requirement is that you should be experienced and certified by someone so that they dont have to provide any training. You would then merely be assessed by the new meter operator or perhaps dno in some areas.

My recommendation would be to apply for an employed position which provides paid training, after that you could always go down the self employed or contract route.

In answer to your question I agree that mocopa does not authorise anyone what they mean is authorisation by a mocopa signatory

cheers Rory, much appreciated. MeterTec I have applied to on several occassions. Still nothing. I have 236, 16th, 17th, 2391. Six years as a spark. mixed aexperiences, Temp electrics, domestic. 3 phase and single phase experience, mains distribution, blah blah blah.

I cant even get an interview with these guys.

Scottish & southern energy (southern electric) do 2weeks single phase training then you get P.T.O licence for single phase cutouts followed by 2 weeks onsite mentoring then after 6mths on job exp do 1 week multi phase training then you get the P.T.O licence on multi phase cutouts at least thats what it was when i was working on metering with them and the scarey thing is there was a guy on 3 phase training with me who was colour blind thought brown was green ! they didnt even do a colour blind test when i was with them ! and i was the only qualified sparks there all other meter engineers didnt even have the regs qual ! might be worth phoning RIG energy up and seeing what they require some require prev metering exp including whole current CT exp.

I have applied to Rig many times, they always want registered people they say with permit to work.

I have asked about traing and where to gain experience so to speak, they dont know.

hello all.
I work in metering industry, and had in house training then weeks of shadowing followed by an assessment. I also needed an assessment from the distribution company for the area I would be working in. This authorised me to pull the main cut out fuse and reseal.

If you want help with getting the right ticket i would say your best bet is the look up Metertec in google. This should help and call them, they should send you back information about cost etc.

Hi again

It should not be necessary to pay for authorisation. Standards seem to vary enormously. Some operators put people through 6 weeks training. On a recent change of employer I had to be assessed for a minimum level of competence followed by a 1 week course. Once you get started with one company then you can apply for the experience required agency jobs. Agencies are not going to train anyone from scratch however much electrical experience they have.

Metertec seem to have plenty of adverts at the moment, they are a route to get started or so I believe.

Metertec are scum do not trust them liars they dont pay the money they owe you there company has made a loss every year they have been trading check companies house for the info.
They are a two bit muppet set up stay away at all costs

You can only get the mocopa throufh a metering company and it only lasts 3 years. Best advice is to get a job with british gas on the metering. Absolute ****e work but easiest way to get the cert
