To expand on Darkwood's points, there are different ways of reversing a motor according to the type of motor, type of supply, and the application. Common configurations that require different switching methods include:

  • Single Phase induction: Permanent split capacitor
  • Single-phase induction: Capacitor start induction run or capacitor start and run or similar
  • 3-Phase induction: Direct-on-line starting
  • 3-Phase induction: Star-delta starting or other reduced-voltage starting scheme
  • Universal brush motor or DC shunt or compound
  • DC Permanent magnet

You can probably get some useful pointers by searching for those types of motor along with 'reversing control' or similar search terms.

I would agree that the motor is by far the best part to replace. if it is powered and not turning then it is broken. Keep it simple!
