I really should know this but......
I have to rewire a church organ. Im using 24v dc as control voltage to get around earthing a metal plate and remove coil hum.
However, the blower is the problem It is 230v soft start 2 HP (about 1500 watts if memory serves). Now do I need this to have overload protection. If it wasnt soft start then obviously yes. But arent there magical things in these motors that negate the use of such items?
Thanks in advance
Simon

It's possible the motor might have protection built in already. Some of the smaller motors like this one have a manual reset button on the motor itself which is a thermal/over-current protector. Some have auto reset thermal protection (thermistor) on the actual windings. The soft starter might have short circuit and/or overload protection built in as well. It depends very much on the make/model number of the soft starter and the motor.

*Edit* Did you have problems with your organ not too long ago? I'm sure I remember a similar topic on this forum a couple of months ago.

Thanks very much everybody. I've decided to put a stand alone overload next to the motor. This will also act as a local means of isolation.
And no. I have never had trouble with my organ before!

Be careful, some soft starts don’t like the load current being disconnected. Set the FLC in the soft start and use an isolator near the motor. The isolator should be fitted with an early break control contact.
