I am going to move a wall light down a little. It may mean extending the cable or reducing the length of it. My question is: If I do either of these I presume I will need to provide RCD protection for the lighting circuit I touch if it does not have it already?? ( cables < 50mm in wall) That could be a pain for a small light move!

Thanks PP

Is it worth the chew on and expense for the benefit the client will get?
Sometimes it's best to advise them to leave it

Trev1 - yep you are right. Its a family member so they might take the hint more easily!! The public don't realise what is required these days to comply with the "regs"!

Ah a love job. if you don't want to do it tell them the price of the materials + a few % tell them all about chasing walls and the mess it makes then tell them it might mean a new CU. It's bound to put them off:)

IMHO if you shorten the cable by a couple of inches that wouldn't need a RCD, however if you extend it you certainly would!

My thoughts too but I am not sure yet which way the cable runs! Suppose I could put an RCD FCU near a socket and run that to the light to save adding an RCBO or a new CU! Choices, choices!

I would say that once you alter the circuit, be it shortening or lengthening the cable to the light, then YOU become the person responsible for that circuit so then you'd need to ensure it was up to present regulations.

Therefore RCD protection will be required.
