Hi all I have been asked to move some sockets in a domestic kitchen . There are no rcd,s present in the property and the owner is not willing to pay for a cu upgrade .Should I walk away from this job or is there another way to comply with the regs . any ideas?

Bearing in mind that this will come under part P I dont think you have any choice but to comply with the regs..........that said under some circumstances, IMO where sockets are simply resited, and are not likely to supply equipment outdoors,it may be appropriate to leave circuit protection as it is.

Bottom line is that 90+% of homeowners do not know about the BS7671 requirement to fit RCD protected sockets and of those 90+% over 50% can not or will not pay the extra.

Madness especially in a home with BS3036.

I've just been in the same boat, 2 extra sockets in a bedroom, so I've quoted her for surface cabling and RCD socket!

If I wrote the rules, I'd allow for sockets to be fitted with a mandatory MWC statement worded in such a way stating that RCD's or a CU change is required within 2 years!

I think in this case you should provide RCD protection to that circuit, perhaps via an RCD in an enclosure alongside the existing CU....if the client refuses to pay walk away.

The house is in need of a full rewire and cu upgrade as the cu is only a 4 way with 3036 fuses there is only one power circuit supplying the whole house (3 bed semi) one lighting circuit and a shower . The customer has recently decorated and will not agree to this .
