Hi Folks,

I am looking to get some advice with regards to relocating to the UK from Australia.

I am an electrical testing technician here in Melbourne, I have 5 years experience, 3 from my apprentiship and 2 as a qualified Tester. I have an Advanced Diploma of Electrical Power Systems.

Here in Aus my role is called an electrical tester, but whilst looking for equivalent jobs in the UK and qualifications I can't seem to get the job title or quals.

What do you guys call yourselves and what do I need to get to be qualified?

I have experience in substation rebuilds as site leader and tester in charge on Zone Substation and Terminal stations, I have Tested and supervised all primary and secondary work as part of protection upgrades and Consulted with design team to rectify design errors.

Can anyone give me some advice and also to the rates you can expect to get?

Cheers

LOL, there are many thread around doing it the other way...but not much for us poor Aussies!

Before you up sticks and come over here looking for a job, I would check that you can get a job now as the rules have been changed for citizans from none EU member states getting a job in this country.

If you are a doctor or something else high up the list of people wanted in this country then you are OK, but if not then you have to go through a vetting procedure.

Rellik666 shouldn't be to hard for you to move over here considering you're from the commonwealth and unlike the rest of the EU you're under the rule of our monarchy.

I'd look up JIB (Joint Industry Board) on the internet and find a phone number and ask them what qualifications you need and what qualifications you have they would be the best one's to advise you as all electricians in Britain need to go through the JIB to get qualified.

I'd find out where you want to move too, try and find companies and get employment even as a sparks helper to build up experiance while you are doing your exams for british qualifications.

I'd say you would need 17th Edition wiring regulations or refresher course
And ECS health and safety which is a must for working on building sites.

I'll warn you the now though, Jobs are scarce in britian at the mo m8 maybe not the best time for moving over. Unless you get a job in a hotel or something first

Not as easy you think now we are in the EU, getting into the UK from the cmmonwealth is not the same as it used to be, they still have to get a visa (a working one at that) and prove that they have a job which is in short supply in this country.

Thanks for all the help....thought it was bad but did think a lot of it was Media hype...maybe not...

Looks like it would be a lot harder than I thought!

Have been looking at SAP roles? Is this right...there seems to be quite a few advertised....but I would need to get the quals first? Is there anything I can do here...

Thanks I will make some phone calls...

Cheers

SAP (Senior Authorised Person) would not really be classified as a specialist job as there are already people in this country with the necessary quals for the position plus you would also need experiance as a AP before getting a SAP position

first of all you need to speak to NARIC UK and see hw they assess your Aussie qualifications, i have dne it too and I work with a kivi fellow which got some qualifications from new zealand and he got here NVQ3 from naric uk for that and got a JIB gold card a few weeks after so i think you should follow the same path. good luck
