Over the yrs we've had a no. of metrel testers,

the leads have always been a bit gash, readings ranging from eh? to the WFT!

Not that I use this equipment very oftend, (see user name)

Where should I be looking for better kit,

downloading is not needed as IIRC easycert don't support it, the rechargable batteries of the metrel is a great idea.

The Megger / Fluke stuff I think we should be using seem to be AA battery powered ?

The Megger 1700 range of MFT's is really nice kit and I would recommend it. If you have deeper pockets, the 1730 has rechargeable batts and bluetooth connectivity.

make your own leads? get some hirschmann 4mm insulated test connectors and some 2.5mm silicone test cable. or just buy the kewtech ready made ones they are not bad.

I think the square end is the problem ?

I personally would go for the meggar 1553, it is the best tester I have ever used and prefer them over the 1700 series which has had problems regarding accuracy, that said I believe the problem on the newer models now have resolved the issues, the 1553 has blue tooth as well as being very easy to use, comes in a lovely case and the plug top lead IMO is far better than the 1720 which is a bit flimsy for my liking.

Yep,but the 1710 and 1720 have alternative battery settings (1.2v/1.5v) so you can opt for rechargeable AA cells if wanted.

Also, not having any cause to buff anyones trumpet, but Meggers after-sales service,in my experience, has been exemplary.

That is very cool. It would be the end user software that would make that the absolute king.
