Hi guys
my fluke 1653 has recently packed in bringing up err1 on the screen an I've been told this is non repairable so I'm in the market for a new tester I've been told the megger is a better tester than the fluke by my friends but I liked my old fluke has anyone any recommendations on the new fluke 1654b I'm thinking of going into a full time testing service rather than contracting so I'm looking for some thing that ha has good storage capacity an download speeds if anybody could help with this information it would be much appreciated thank you

Buy both, try at home and send one back. Only you can tell which one you like best as both are nice units to use but they have subtle differences.

Error 1, Self-Test failure. The fault is not user serviceable, return tester to a Fluke service centre.

Error 1 is an internal fault which refers to two general fault conditions:
Hardware – If the unit attempts to power up and the relays can be heard latching.
Firmware – If the unit attempts to power up and the relays can’t be heard latching

If however you you choose to buy a new tester and have been happy with the Fluke then buy another. Don't even consider changing brands, particularly to Megger whose bluetooth "download" method is not intuitive, Megger admit this by running a course teaching how to do it. The company I used to work for sent 20 electricians on the course when we switched to Megger MFTs, none of them still uses the software, because in practice it's quicker with pen and paper.

I have a Megger 1553 and never used the bluetooth function plus I have it in a Fluke carry case ? yep I like the Megger but cannot stand the carrycase so if anyone wants it drop me a mail plus I dont think there is much between the Fluke and Megger it is all down to choice and like everything else you need to look after your gear my voltage tester is 20 years old my 2 Fluke multimeters are 25yo so why did I buy the Megger well the cost and bluetooth function

Megger are great Iv'e a 1553 and they come with 3 year warranty and are pretty bomb proof, the only one point I will give fluke over the megger it does do loop faster!

But both are top makes!

My mate has a 1700 and thats really good for what its worth.

You could email your local sales manager for megger to make sure you get a good price at the local wholsalers! I did and got my 1553 back then for 509 +vat!

Hi guys thanks for all the help the problem with returning the fluke is it has to be sent back to fluke which costs £100 just to look at it then parts after that which could run into 300 to 400 pounds an u only get 3 months warranty with it , but thanks all I think I'll go for the megger as people say they take more abuse an don't blow up as easy thanks all again for your help

Don't sent the MFT to Fluke mate find an independent approved Fluke service centre their prices are usually more competitive than Fluke direct. I've used Acutest in the past with very good service, maybe not the cheapest, but their fixed price repair and/or calibration limits the cost and you know the "damage" up front. It's normally a 7 day turn around service, sometimes quicker in slack times.
Acutest - Book a Calibration or Repair

Thanks mate i sent my meter to cuthbertson an laird in belfast and they told me it had to go to holland to fluke , so im set to recieve it back this week but ill try acutest thanks for your help

Just been having a look at the Acutest link, ...i now know why you sparks are apprehensive about getting your MFTs etc calibrated or repaired by these big boy's!!! lol!!

If that's not a money making machine, i don't know what is!!! It almost makes more sense to buy a new MFT every year or so, than to cough up over 300 quid for a 3 month guarantee when your unit goes belly up!! lol!!!

I look at it this way I went on a course 25 years ago and it was about building maintenance and the guy running the course commented on the washing machine industry and that they had a life cycle of 5-7 years plus the manufacturers would set up their production cycle to suit this plus if it broke down after 5 years then replace it dont try to repair and just buy a basic one so right after that my 6 year old WM broke down it needed a new rubber band as they say £90 the machine cost £250 3 months later I replaced the brushes £20 and 6 months later the programmer stopped working so I bought the same machine for £250 remember I paid £250 for it 7 years before then 6 years later yep I went and bought a new one funny enough for £250 and it lasted 6 years and guess what my replacement WM cost me 6 months ago.

So MFTs look after it dont use it to bang in nails and if you get more than 5 years out of it it is a bonus plus dont lend it out why because you wont abuse it but the clown who borrowed it just might because he does not have to pay for it sad but true this seems to be the state of affairs today no respect
