Hi all. I'm hoping someone will be able to stop me killing myself with a multimeter.

I have re occuring problems with two lights and have bought a multimeter to find out where the problem is i.e. the last working light before the problem. I am an idiot in trying to use it and having read the instructions that seem to suggest I should have the power off before testing?????? Am I really that stupid or does the circuit need that power to test in the first place?

I can get no reading from this lump of wiring whether I set the thing to DC V or AC V. Which is it and where do i connect (wires, bulb lugs?) as anywhere I look does not make it clear.

I am at my whits end with this problem which I have been chasing for weeks, please help.

Frustrated beyond belief.

Bro - stop, desist, anchors away, wooooho there Bessie, hold on, pull those reigns, halt, put the breaks on .... Don't touch it anymore. Please listen to all these other dudes. STOP. Get someone in to help you or do it for you. :)

Be safe Bro - no more.

Vikingbobw - you have had a LOT of advice from people who know what they are talking about, and you obviously don't have a clue when it comes to fixing electrics. No offence mate, you just need some facts pointing out to you. Most of the advice you have had on here is to call in a professional and I have to agree - you are well out of your depth. I know money is tight but I would pose this question to you - what value do you put on your life? ÂŁ50? ÂŁ75? I'm guessing a lot more than that, but that's roughly what it's going to cost you to call out a professional who has the correct equipment and the knowledge and training to be able to fix this, probably within 30 minutes to an hour. Do yourself a favour my friend and make that phone call. It will save your life.
