Whilst it is useful to have this forum as a resource isn't slightly worrying that your customers read it?

Unless your known as Greenday the spark there's no worry. :)

simple simon, i see your from slogh, the car nicking capital of england... cops with cameras (source)

customers will search everywhere and anywhere if they want too... its like you when you buying something you have a nosey around the web to get an idea..

I do worry that it's very easy to be misunderstood over the interwebs and that not all comments are written the way they are read.

There was a user on a thread a while back that I was a little sharp with (long days, paperwork nights ;) ) I later realised he shared a name with a potenial customer, fortunalty the user was a long way away and hopefully not the same guy - hate to lose a job for a loose random comment!

Don't write anything if you have had a long day then...
Personally I think its a good thing that customers can see what a **** shambles this industry is, they then put their trust in me to wade through it all.

We regularly pick up work through the Forum - it's worked well for us. I try to go to the lounge to let off steam.

Yeah, there are areas of the forum that aren't visible to customers but it's always worth remembering that whatever you post on the Internet has the potential to haunt you for the remainder of your born days.

I'd rather stand by my opinions and say what I think. Sadly, I have very little filter between what I think, and what I say, but at least it's honest!
And couldn't give a monkeys what my customers might think of me ;)

Most people thinking of installing solar power will chat on forums before they decided to buy ! dont you research a product or company before purchasing goods?

Speaking as as customer, I find this forum to be a very useful source of learning and makes me appreciate what great lengths you installers are willing to go to in order to satisfy your customers.

And the great stress the governments' rapid rule change is causing.

Fortunately, again thanks to this forum, I found out about the rule change early on and my system is now installled and running.

So, you good installers have nothing to be concerned with keeping the forum free to view for everyone.

Ditto. Also speaking as a customer.

I have a much better understanding of what you are going through from reading this forum, and I both sympathise and are impressed by how you are 'coping'.

I would suggest, tho', that you all join the 'lounge' area just in case you have a particularly bad day. Yeah, I know - that's everyday...

To be honest, I often point customers to this forum and advise them to do a little bit of their own research. Its a big investment and they're far less likely to get conned (and lets be honest, there are plenty of dodgy firms out there) if they have had a read of this forum first.

well depends on the inspector!! lot of nice ones out there but one perticular PLONKER gets rigt on my FLUKE:) same questions EVERY YR! same TESTS every yr! GET A LIFE ! or just CHILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I wouldn't make a serious purchase without researching it first. I found this forum almost by accident and am so glad that I did. It has helped me make an informed decision through thorough research and honest feedback. Plenty of people knock the various trades for one reason or another. I cannot recommend the people on here highly enough: honest and supporting - exactly what a consumer needs before making a purchasing decision.

I only hope that I can repay something by offering help to others who come along after me.

I'm a customer looking for an install after the glorious 12th. I've learnt more from here than anywhere else. I've been lurking for a while but have today registered so I can see photos and links.
I'm still reading about what to get/not get and what a decent install should consist of.

I need a installer that can do a quality job and fix the panels securely as it is very windy here.

This is all very useful to me so thanks to all.

Firstly, where do you live?
Also, Because the FIT is still in consultation until the 23rd, it may be better to wait and see what the tariff is going to be.
It has not been confirmed that it will be 21p for >4KWP, I personally have stopped selling until that has been confirmed, the reasons for this are twofold, I would not want to sell a 25year investment to anybody not knowing for certain that it would be set at that tariff, secondly, and this point is controversial, PV companies may be breaking the law if they sell systems at this moment in time, it is not something that I am willing to risk.
Hope this helps.

Daddycool, Get a survey now by all means, but do not rush the install before Jan or Feb. Panel prices have dropped in the last couple of days, but they are due to drop again in Jan another 5% or more perhaps as the market readjusts. There will probably be another mini feeding frenzy in March in advance of the likely EPC level C requirement, so do not leave it that long.

Evo Energy are touting for new business using the 21p/kWh figure (New FiT Rates | EvoEnergy). Presumably, they've decided that it's legal to do this.

Daddycool we'd be happy to offer you a survey depending on where you are in the country, no harm in getting the details taken and a price given on todays rates- we are upfront and honest when repricing and if the prices drop when you come to make a decision then this will be passed onto you.

I found my PV installer on here after speaking to a couple of other suppliers. They rasied some questions to which I was looking for answers so I looked on here. Found one rather vocal contributors located fairly conveniently to me and after discussions and a bit more research ended up buying from him.

Evo energy obtained their MCS for Solar PV on the 10/6/2011, I researched the company about 3 months back, they portray to have been trading since 2007, which may be the case, but they have not been trading as an accredited PV company, something else maybe?
I personally am more about honesty, and good practice, as we have not had the result of the consultation that ends on the 23rd it all could change.
If you are planning to be involved in the Industry for the long term, then to upset customers by promising them a 21p FIT and then find out that they only get "say" 12p would not be good practice.
How would you feel if this happened to you? Would you tell everybody that you had been conned by Joe Blogs PV?

I don't agree with their conjecture that another round of consultation would be required for the rate to be set to something other than 21p. There were plenty of changes to the rates between those proposed in the first consultation in 2009 and those which were actually introduced in April 2010.

The judicial review application did not succeed at the written stage, but the oral application is still to be heard so perhaps they are a little sensitive.

Phil - Thanks for the welcome
EarthStore - In in South Yorkshire as Phil suggests I've added that detail to my profile now. Your wait and see advice is where I am at - hence looking around in here for some advice from the real world rather than out of date corporate websites.
Bruce B - Like I said above still looking around. I think that I meet EPC C but need to research that some more.
Redmile - I'm expecting equipment prices to fall too now so watching and waiting

What I'm after is a decent install with some decent reliable kit, not the cheapest install I can find. I'm in a windy location so I need someone who knows about the effects of sideways rain!
In no rush at all as many factors to consider.
